Can You Track Your CP2000 Response Status?
By CP2000Response Editorial Team | Reviewed for legal context by David McNickel
After mailing a CP2000 response and waiting weeks without any communication from the IRS, the natural question is whether there is a way to check on the status. The short answer is that IRS case tracking for CP2000 responses is limited compared to, for example, tracking a tax refund.
There is no online status portal where you can enter a notice number and see where your response sits in the review process. However, several tools and channels provide useful information about your account and allow you to confirm that your response was received. Check our ‘After CP2000 Response hub for more response insights.
USPS Certified Mail Tracking: The First Step
Before reaching out to the IRS, check the USPS certified mail tracking record for your response. Go to USPS.com and enter the tracking number from your certified mail receipt. The tracking record will show:
- The date the package was accepted at the post office
- Transit updates
- The date and time of delivery to the IRS facility
If the tracking record shows delivery, you have confirmation that your response arrived at the IRS campus. This does not tell you what stage of processing it has reached, but it confirms the IRS has it.
IRS Online Account: The Most Useful Self-Service Tool
Your IRS online account at IRS.gov provides access to account information for each tax year. For CP2000 tracking purposes, the most useful feature is the account transcript for the year in question. An account transcript shows:
- Any assessments that have been posted to your account – useful for confirming that agreed items have been formally assessed after you submitted an agreement
- Any payments that have been applied – confirms payment posting if you sent payment with your response
- Notices and letters issued by the IRS – may show that a follow-up notice has been generated before you receive it in the mail
- Transaction codes that indicate account activity – while interpreting all transaction codes requires familiarity with IRS coding conventions, codes 291 and 290 can indicate that a proposed adjustment was removed or adjusted
To access your IRS online account, go to IRS.gov and navigate to “Your Online Account.” Identity verification is required for first-time access, typically using IRS.gov’s identity verification system.
Calling the IRS AUR Unit
The most direct way to check on your CP2000 response status is to call the IRS AUR unit at the phone number printed on the original CP2000 notice. This number routes to the unit handling your specific account.
Before calling, have the following ready:
- Your Social Security number
- The CP2000 notice number (printed in the upper right corner of the notice)
- The tax year under review
- Your certified mail tracking number and the mailing date
When the IRS representative answers, ask: “I submitted a response to CP2000 notice [number] for tax year [XXXX] on [date] via certified mail. I’d like to confirm that the response has been received and logged in the system, and get an estimate of when I can expect a response.”
The representative can confirm whether your response is in the system and provide a general estimate of the current processing timeline. They typically cannot tell you the decision, as that has not been made until the examiner completes the review.
When to Call and When to Wait
Calling the IRS before your response has had time to be processed typically produces unhelpful results – the representative cannot locate a response that has not yet been logged. Wait at least 60 days from the date the IRS received your response (confirmed by USPS tracking) before calling to inquire.
Call immediately if:
- You receive a new notice that suggests the IRS is proceeding as if no response was received
- You receive a CP3219A (Statutory Notice of Deficiency) after having submitted a timely CP2000 response
- More than 90 days have passed without any correspondence and your online account shows no activity
IRS Phone Number for CP2000 Inquiries
The phone number for CP2000 inquiries is printed on your specific notice. There is no universal CP2000 phone number that applies to all accounts – the number on your notice routes to the service center handling your case. If you no longer have the notice, you can call the general IRS individual taxpayer assistance line at 1-800-829-1040 and ask to be connected to the AUR unit for your account.
IRS phone lines have significant wait times. Call as early in the business day as possible (shortly after 7:00 a.m. local time when lines open) and consider calling early in the week rather than Friday. Having all your account information ready before the representative answers makes the call more efficient.
Summary
Tracking a CP2000 response status is limited but possible through three channels: USPS certified mail tracking (confirms delivery), your IRS online account (shows account activity and assessment posting), and a phone call to the AUR unit at the number on the notice. Wait at least 60 days after confirmed delivery before calling. The IRS does not provide a real-time online tracking portal for CP2000 responses, but your account transcript and a direct inquiry to the AUR unit are the most reliable information sources available.
